Women Like Sex | Ep. 4: Just a Clutch-ful of Shame

Artwork by Ted Nunes

So far on Women Like Sex, researchers and academics have peeled back the history and foundations of some of the most profound myths about female sexuality. How do these myths impact our lives?

Jonynne is the first of my guests to share their personal perspective. We met when we both lived in Nashville, where she was born and raised, and at a reading of her work. A couple of years later, she and her whiz IT skills moved to Denmark. Jonynne is the kind of friend I wish for everyone. Smart as hell, funny as hell, and it doesn't matter what topic I bring up in any chat, she’s already thought deeply about it and has an eye-opening observation to add.

Our conversation actually lasted three hours, a lot of it before the microphones were even on. Jonynne shares how she was taught the mechanics – rather than emotions – of sex. About how long it took her to value her pleasure above a man’s. About being a Black woman dating white men in the US, where she was once asked to slavery cosplay. And how she’s thriving in a relationship in Denmark, where she says women, and the culture at large, aren’t held hostage by incels.

A full transcript of our conversation is available here.
